TimeTechnics
Guests lean in around a lit watchmaker's bench as a participant works on a movement during a private evening class
TimeTechnics · Private classes

A watchmaking class of your own.

For friends, family, a collectors' club or your team. Two to eight guests sit at real watchmakers' benches for two to four hours and take a mechanical movement apart, with a professional watchmaker beside them. We come to you.

i.Yours alone

Your guests, your date, your room.

How a private class works

A TimeTechnics private class is booked by you, for people you choose. Nobody else buys a seat. You set the date, the place and the length, and the whole session is built around your group.

ii.The occasion

Good reasons to gather at the bench.

a.

Celebrations

A birthday, an anniversary or a retirement. A gift people remember, shared with the people who matter.

b.

Collectors' circles

Your watch club or a group of friends who already talk calibres over dinner and want to work on one.

c.

Teams & offsites

Precision, patience and some laughter. A team activity that leaves everyone with a new skill.

d.

Client evenings

For boutiques, banks and brands: give your best clients an evening of watchmaking under your roof.

iii.Choose your class

Three classes, one price for the group.

Pick a class and the number of guests to see the price. Each step builds on the one before, so a longer class takes you further into the movement. See what each class covers →

iv.How it unfolds

An afternoon, hour by hour.

Here is a four-hour Horology 101-103. Shorter classes follow the same order with less time at the bench. Times are a guide.

  1. −2:00

    We set the room

We arrive at least two hours before the class to set up a bench, lamp, tools and movement for every guest, and connect the screen.

  2. 0:00

    Welcome & the big picture

A short visual introduction: how time is kept, how a movement is built, and why some watches cost what they do.

  3. 0:15

    Introduction to watchmaking

The craft, its history and its vocabulary, so everyone shares the same words before touching a part.

  4. 0:35

    The movement explained

On screen, the instructor walks through the movement in front of each guest: energy, gear train, escapement and balance.

  5. 0:55

    Try the screwdrivers

Loupe on, tools in hand. Everyone learns to hold tweezers and turn a screwdriver like a watchmaker.

  6. 1:10

    Disassemble the movement

Step by step, guests take the movement apart, with each step projected on screen and the watchmaker at their side.

  7. 2:00

    Break

Time to stretch, rest the eyes and compare notes.

  8. 2:15

    Reassemble the entire movement

The careful part: putting every part back together until the balance starts to swing.

  9. 3:30

    Debrief & watch talk

Questions, the watches on everyone's wrists, and stories from the trade to finish.

Concentration, then pride.

"Everyone arrives curious. They leave knowing exactly what is happening inside the watch on their wrist."
Vincent Robert · Watchmaker, FHH master trainer
vii.Questions

Before you ask.

Does anyone need experience?

No. The classes are designed for complete beginners. Collectors who already know their calibres enjoy them just as much, because they finally get to work on one.

How much does a private class cost?

One price covers the whole class: from $1,300 for Horology 101 with 2 guests to $4,400 for Horology 101-103 with 8 guests. Travel expenses outside the instructor's city are added to the total.

Where can you come?

Anywhere a plane takes us. We teach mostly in the United States, Canada and Europe, and travel further for the right occasion.

What room do we need?

A quiet room with a table and chair for each guest and power nearby. A dining room, meeting room, private dining room or boutique lounge all work. We bring everything else.

Do guests keep the movement?

The movements and tools are part of the class equipment and come back with us. If you would like your guests to take something home, ask us when you request your class.

Can the class be in French?

Yes. Classes are taught in English or French.

How far ahead should we book?

Ideally four to eight weeks ahead, and more for travel abroad. Ask anyway if your date is close.

More than 8 guests?

Ask us. We can run two classes back to back, or bring a second instructor.
